Dermatologic Surgery & Minor Procedures

Some skin conditions require more than medication alone. At Nova Derma, minor dermatologic procedures are performed after careful clinical assessment to determine the safest and most appropriate treatment.

Procedures are performed using local anesthesia when needed to keep treatment comfortable.

Skin Biopsy

A skin biopsy may be recommended when a skin lesion, rash or growth requires microscopic examination to confirm the diagnosis.

A biopsy is a sampling procedure, not a treatment in itself. The dermatologist chooses the technique that gives the most useful information for the suspected condition:

- Shave biopsy
- Punch biopsy
- Incisional biopsy
- Excisional biopsy

The collected tissue is sent to an external pathology laboratory for histopathological examination when indicated, helping guide diagnosis and further treatment. Nova Derma does not operate an in-house laboratory.

Which Procedure Is Right for the Lesion?

A procedure is chosen only after the diagnosis is confirmed and the lesion has been assessed. The appropriate procedure is chosen only after confirming the diagnosis and assessing the lesion, and the dermatologist selects the technique that best suits the lesion and its location.

What May Be Treated With a Procedure

  • Moles removed because of irritation, appearance or medical concern
  • Skin tags that are irritated, catch on clothing or jewelry, or are removed for cosmetic reasons
  • Selected benign skin growths
  • Common warts
  • Skin lesions, rashes or growths that require biopsy to confirm the diagnosis

When a Destructive Procedure Is Postponed

  • A mole that is changing in size, shape or color, or appears clinically unusual, is evaluated before any destructive treatment
  • A lesion that is atypical, pigmented, ulcerated, bleeding or diagnostically uncertain is biopsied or excised first, not destroyed
  • A new, generalized or otherwise atypical presentation that needs medical assessment before a procedure

Mole Removal

Before removal, every mole is assessed by the dermatologist to determine whether it is suitable for removal and which technique is most appropriate. Treatment may include surgical excision, electrosurgery, or surgical CO₂ laser in selected benign lesions. If microscopic examination is required, biopsy or surgical excision is recommended so the tissue can be examined by an external pathology laboratory.

Skin Tag Removal

Skin tags are common benign skin growths that often occur around the neck, underarms, eyelids and other areas of friction. They can be removed when they become irritated, catch on clothing or jewelry, or for cosmetic reasons. Depending on their size and location, removal may be performed using electrosurgery, surgical CO₂ laser or minor surgical removal.

Electrosurgery, surgical CO₂ laser and cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen are used for selected benign lesions only, after the diagnosis has been confirmed.

Other Minor Dermatologic Procedures

Nova Derma also provides selected office-based procedures including:

  • Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen
  • Electrosurgery
  • Surgical CO₂ laser procedures

  • Treatment of common warts

The appropriate procedure is chosen only after confirming the diagnosis and assessing the lesion. Warts and molluscum are covered in more detail on our Warts & Molluscum page.

Where are biopsy results examined?

The collected tissue is sent to an external pathology laboratory for histopathological examination when indicated, helping guide diagnosis and further treatment.

Will a suspicious mole be removed with a laser?

No. A mole that is changing in size, shape or color, or appears clinically unusual, is evaluated before any destructive treatment. If microscopic examination is required, biopsy or surgical excision is recommended so the tissue can be examined by an external pathology laboratory.

Will a mole be removed at the first visit?

Every mole is assessed by the dermatologist first, to determine whether it is suitable for removal and which technique is most appropriate.

Does Nova Derma have an in-house laboratory?

No. Pathological examination of a biopsy specimen is performed by an external pathology laboratory.

Can skin tags and other benign growths be removed?

Considering a Minor Procedure?

A dermatology consultation comes first. The dermatologist assesses the lesion, confirms the diagnosis and decides whether a procedure is the safest and most appropriate treatment, or whether observation is better.
